Postpartum Healing & Recovery
We can never quite know how the ‘fourth trimester’ will be until we have experienced it, and it will be unique for each parent and for each baby. After the baby is born, a new rush of changes take place in your body, mind and heart. Becoming a parent is a process, and does not happen overnight. It is normal to feel like you don’t know what you’re doing and are floating in a strange, sleepless state of overwhelm and anxiety. While is undoubtedly a time for bonding with this beautiful new being in your life and focusing much of your energy on them, it is also equally important to take care of you. Lack of sleep, exhaustion, birth trauma and/or postpartum depression can all take its toll. After the initial postpartum adjustment, when you have the hang of feeding, some semblance of routine, and have the go-ahead from your medical practitioner, you may consider prioritising your own self-care and healing through some one-on-one postpartum recovery sessions.
Having a baby brings deep changes. Full postpartum recovery can take weeks, months or even years, depending on the person. Giving birth affects your partnership, your relationships to family & friends, your daily routine, your body and identity. In our sessions, I can help ease this transition physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually for you.
Natural Treatment for Postpartum Depression
It is normal and common to have the ‘baby blues’ for the first couple of weeks after giving birth- feeling emotional, down, and frequent crying is a normal response to hormonal shifts following the birth. Postpartum Depression (PPD) has longer lasting effects. It is important that if you are feeling down most of the time, withdrawn from family and friends, losing interest in your usual activities, have racing thoughts and worries or feel any urges to harm your child to immediately speak to someone about what you are feeling and contact your healthcare provider for support. You may find that medication helps your symptoms, or receiving counselling from a therapist. Sessions with me are a wonderful compliment to speaking to a therapist or taking medication. Studies have shown the effectiveness of movement, yoga, relaxation exercises and meditation for postpartum depression.
Healing tools I may use are: Postpartum Movement for Pelvic Health, Womb Blessing/Healing, Womb Care Rituals, Restorative yoga, meditation, and aromatherapy. For your convenience, we can do the sessions online, as I understand how challenging it can be to get out of the house for an appointment. Or, you may choose to come to my place in the east end of Toronto.
Our weekly sessions will focus on improving your pelvic floor health, gently and gradually rebuilding core strength, improving your sleep quality, releasing tension that accumulates from feeding and carrying the baby, and find a new way of being in your body that suits your new lifestyle and role. It is not the same body you had pre-pregnancy, and will take some adjustment to feel at home in this new version of you.
You may not have had time to process your birth experience and all the feelings that have come along with it. I can listen and hold safe space for you to share this, and can support you with mind-body tools to help your process, such as writing, drawing, meditation and earth-based rituals.
Spiritual Healing After Birth
Giving birth is a rite of passage that often goes unacknowledged in our society. Regular sessions together are a wonderful way to both ease and celebrate this transition into your new role. We can acknowledge the spiritual dimension each week through meditations, affirmations and self-expression; Or we can co-create a specific ritual that honors the shift from who you were before to who you are now, empowering you inside and out. As an earth-based practitioner, I can help put together a ritual using the 4 elements, lunar and seasonal cycles, imagery, prayer and more, or if you have a spiritual lineage or practice already and would like me to simply witness and support, I can do that also.
*Our sessions are not meant to replace medical or psychological attention or diagnosis. Holistic post-partum support is a wonderful compliment to medical or psychological support.
